Best Friend

There's this thing you've got with your best friends of the opposite sex. You're not exactly supposed to fall for them.

But here comes, Adam. The charming Adam with the million-dollar smile. And there goes his best friend Katharine, the pretty, silent type. They've been best friends for god knows how long.

They cry on each other's shoulders. They've been there for each other for too long. They share secrets. They hold hands and they think about forever. And sometimes, people already think they're together.

But here's the catch, when Katharine was younger, she swore to never fall in love with Adam cause she know she'd lose to all the other girls who falls for him. And besides, she told herself, she's already got Adam as her best friend. What more could she ask for?

But yes. Shit does happen. She fell for him. Hard and deep. Nobody knew about it but her. Wanna know why? Because she broke her promise and she hated it. Because she doesn't want Adam to know she fell for him and have him laugh at her for feeling this way. Because Adam is going out with someone else. And knowing that breaks her little heart.

But she acts okay. She pulled her shit together and put on that smile. But her eyes, her brown eyes betray her actions. Her brown eyes show nothing but brokenness and despair.

One day, on her way out the mall, she bumped into Adam with his girlfriend and made small talk. After a few minutes, she made an excuse and left. She didn't want to stay and have her heart shattered than they already are. She didn't want to stay and have to fake her smiles. So she said goodbye, turned around and left without a second glance, not knowing tears were already streaming down her face.

What she doesn't know is that Adam knew it all. He saw through her. He saw past her defenses, her fake smiles and forced happiness. He knew she loved him more than she should.

The minute she turned around that day he thought to himself,

Turn around. Just turn around. Look back and I'll leave her for you, Kath.
